Selly Raby Kane, the new face of African fashion

The Senegalese fashion designer discusses her journey through the fashion industry – from drawing pictures inspired by movies she had seen to speaking on the global stage that is the Design Indaba Conference in 2015. She is then named artistic director of the annual conference of 2017 in Cape Town, the biggest festival of design of Africa, « a real challenge » for the creator , unanimously hailed for the installation made for the event.

While a private law student in Paris, it was in 2008 that Kane decided to return to Dakar, her hometown,

to see if the clothes she designed from a very young age « have something to say relevant ». Upon arrival, it is a city in full excitement that she finds. And it is in this « incredible cultural bubbling » that she meets other talents of the capital with whom she will join the group of Little Stones, a breeding ground for alternative youth and a real platform for artistic expression. With the talented photographer Omar Victor Diop, the designer is producing in 2016 the series « Mindset » exhibited at the Grand Palais as part of the international art fair Paris Photo.
