Guo Pei – Tale and Legend

Guo Pei – Couture Beyond

Guo Pei is China’s most renowned couturier. For over 20 years, she has been dressing celebrities, distinguished ladies, royalty and political elite who turn to her for show-stopping, magnificent creations when they want to look beautiful and stand out from the crowd.

The Great Wall

The Great Wall of China has a history of over 2,000 years, but the history of the watchtowers is much earlier than that of the Great Wall. 25,000 watchtowers were built alongside the Great Wall of China to watch enemies and pass military messages.

The ancient times, if intruders approached, soldiers on the tower would create smoke in the daytime and light a fire at night to warn their troops, making them the important component of the Great Wall defense system. They are the oldest but an efficient telegram system of China.

Sun Shrine (2020)
Shrines and temples are places of worship in China that also represent the pure land or pure environment, designed to inspire inner and outer peace. A temple consists not only of its buildings, but also the surrounding environment, symbolizing the five elements of fire, air, earth, water, and wisdom.

The Weight Of Gold (2018)

Gold, the colour of royalty, power and wealth among the Chinese. Gold ingots were the currency in China till the 20th century. The Yellow River runs through the prosperous golden regions of Northern China. In centuries past, it was worn by emperors commanding dynasties amongst whom the Yellow Emperor was known to have founded China. Beyond the Chinese, gold stands globally for prosperity; the weight of one’s worth, the promise of one’s dreams.

Enter The Golden Dragon (2018)

During the days of Imperial China, the Emperor of China used the dragon as a symbol of his imperial power and strength. The founder of Han Dynasty Liu Bang claimed that he was conceived after his mother dreamt of a dragon. During the Tang Dynasty, Emperors wore robes with dragon motif as an imperial symbol.

In European cultures, the dragon is a fire-breathing, aggressive creature but to the Chinese, the dragon traditionally symbolizes potent and suspicious powers. The dragon is a symbol of power, strength, and good luck in East Asian culture, a spiritual and cultural symbol that represents prosperity and good luck. It is a rain deity that fosters harmony.

Commissioned by SCAD and executive produced by SCAD President and Founder Paula Wallace, the short film « Guo Pei: Couture Beyond » celebrates a landmark moment in global fashion — the designer’s first solo U.S. exhibition at SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film. The fantastical imagery in « Guo Pei: Couture Beyond » marries the couturière’s otherworldly creations with natural wonder, evoking landscapes that exist only in the imagination. The narrative brings to life the resplendence of her exquisite designs, which successfully unite fine traditional craftsmanship and contemporary innovation.
